I am terribly fond of the entire Company series, but the first book remains my favorite. Something about the way Mendoza's voice works with the setting and how she interacts with the rest of the characters just perfectly hits all my buttons. I think Baker is really talented in writing things that sneak up on you and punch you in the gut.

If you sign up for Tor's free ebook program, you can download In the Garden of Iden. You need to supply an email address to sign up, and the link lasts for (I think) two weeks. So if anyone wants to check the series out, now is a good chance. :)

Thanks delurker--I was remiss in not mentioning that.

It was indeed 6/13's free e-book, and judging by past practice, links will be in 6/20's e-mail as well. (Though I'm not sure when they're taking things down; I've just tried the links in some of the much older e-mails I have and they work. So if someone signs up but for some reason doesn't get the download links for this, I'll be glad to forward the appropriate e-mail.)

I was wondering when you would read this series. I think it will be interesting discussing them with you, but I'd prefer to wait until you've finished. That's mostly because I don't think I can avoid spoilers in my comments.
